MOON RIDGE ESTATE
MOON RIDGE ESTATE
Largely north east facing warm volcanic slopes.
3 hectares vineyard planted in Syrah, Pinot Gris, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Only exhibited twice. New Zealand Wine Awards 2000; silver for the Syrah and bronze for the Pinot Gris. Australian boutique wine awards in Sydney 2010; gold for the Syrah. (Voted second best wine of the show by the judges).
16 hectares river flats of fertile silt loam available for maize, grass hay and sileage or as an airfield for microlights, ideal for equestrian purposes. Presently in maize in two large blocks.
The balance of the farm is divided into 24 paddocks by various types of fencing including permanent, electric and netting. This presently runs a 26 cow pedigree Red Devon Stud and accordingly rising one and two year old heifers and bulls. Bulls are sold readily in the spring and summer. Trading cattle, both steers and heifers are also wintered for fattening in the spring and summer.
The property is superbly watered from a relatively shallow bore by a large centrifugal pump to troughs in all paddocks. This is excellent water and was apparently sought by brewers throughout the district in earlier times. A large stream forms the eastern boundary and the Mangatawhiri River the southern, so there is clearly an opportunity for future irrigation should it ever be desired.
The main ridge of the property is a volcanic tuff from the Bombay eruption and an old scoria quarry is evident at the southern end. Shelter is provided to the south west prevailing wind, by a shelter belt/woodlot now well established.
Buildings on the land consist of a converted cowshed structure which provides a lunch room and office for the vineyard whilst the lean-to portion houses 40-50 barrels of maturing wine. A tractor shed also includes a raised floor lockup area suitable as surplus storage or dangerous goods store. A large 12 x 8 metre pole type hay barn has been constructed to serve the flat lands. A small single garage with workshop area exists adjoining a previous house site.
